Graphic Design Pathway Booklet - front cover, double page spread, numbers

These are my designs for a brief given to re-design a Graphic Design pathway booklet.  I produced a front cover, double page spread and number pages and restricted the colours to black and white. During the development stages I took into consideration the potential user of the booklet and so decided to use a schoolbook, homemade approach. I used the idea of a textbook cover as the front and textbook pages as the theme for the double page spread. This works well with the casual handwritten text. The overall design is relatively simple for maximum impact and clear communication.

Book Binding

Here are the pages I designed in response to a book binding brief.  The ideas for the book pages were inspired from three randomly selected words,
Site - Iceland
Object - Paperclip
Body- Twins
After brainstorming these subjects I began to focus on paperclips as the linking element to my designs. The use of paperclips is present in each page as I have used it as a continuous line which gives the overall piece fluidity. I chose to use 'twins' as the overall theme to my book and expressed this through use of typography and illustration, the continuous line represents the constant bond between twins and I depicted the DNA of twins by using paperclips. The subject of Iceland is shown through colour, I selected the red and white colours from the flag of the country to add interest and striking qualities to the appearance of the book. I really enjoyed the design processes involved in this brief especially learning the technique of pagination and book binding, it is definitely a process I would like to use in later projects.

Thinking outside the bubble

This is one of four designs I made in response to a brief set by Leeds college of art to progress on to interview stage.  I was given 4 symbols, a speech bubble being one of them, to use to express my creative ambitions as a graphic designer.

Snake

I chose the computer game 'Snake' for a viral campaign brief, this involved research, development of a concept and finally producing a video which could have the potential to be circulated. I reproduced a game of snake using sugarcubes and the stop motion technique. I thought this gave an indie and homemade feel which tied in well with the music also.

Magazine - layouts, front cover, double page spreads

Here is my outcome from a magazine brief. The brief was to design a front cover and editorial layout for an art and design magazine, after looking in various book shops I came across 'Flux' magazine, it was ideal to use for this brief as it experiments with typography, layouts, media mixes and styles. Therefore I could be a lot more flexible in my choice of 'splash' and style.
Our brief was to pick a topic on instructing people, I initially began with a simple topic of how to be happy, in my research I came across the iconic symbol of the smiley face. This is typically associated with drugs in particular LSD and after further research decided upon the idea of artificial happiness and how it can be enhanced temporarily by using drugs. The drug LSD connotates images of colour, repetition and busyness so I designed a simple and controlled representation of this.

Dust is Beautiful

In response to a brief given with the title 'Dust' I produced a number of outcomes that explored ideas relating.  In my research stages I found an interest in the idea that dust could be viewed as beautiful and precious in contrast to our common opinions on it, also this allowed me to progress to the realisation that dust is everywhere and surrounds us every day. I took this one step further by using typography to represent dust in two of my outcomes.  The concept of dust in and around the mouth area was thought of to both surprise and repulse the image viewers. I played around with typography size to represent the microscopic element of dust. I also created a soley typographic response designed to portray dust as pretty through delicate arrangement of individual letters made out of the word 'dust'.

Water, Oil, light

These are thumbnails of A1 sheets with differing arrangements of printed contact sheets. The contact sheets are the images I collected in the research stages of the water, oil and light brief. When looking at the sheets I recognised three main colour themes in the light images, I decided to use this element in creating different arrangements.
